Sergio Vega

Ikon Eastside, 183 Fazeley Street, Digbeth, Birmingham

Argentinian-born artist Sergio Vega presents high definition video imagery which explores the mythologies of paradise. Static camera shots show the vivid landscape of Brazil; forests, animals, insects, rivers, towns and people are carefully synchronised across multiple projections.

Vega’s interest in notions of paradise stems from a seventeenth century declaration by historian Antonio de León Pinelo that the mythical Garden of Eden was in South America. Vega found Pinelo’s paradise in Mato Grosso, Brazil and now transports this distant land into the gallery space. Playing on our increasingly loose connection with nature, a symptom of urban life intensified by technological development, the artist taps into current environmental preoccupations and concerns.

Projected within he industrial context of Ikon Eastside, Vega’s work is an incongruous vision of utopia.
