Alastair MacLennan delivers a performance lecture in Present to Presence, a performance art laboratory including Indonesian and UK-based artists. Presented as part of Melati Suryodarmo’s exhibition Passionate Pilgrim (17 May – 3 September 2023).

About the artist
Alastair MacLennan (b. 1943, Blair Atholl, Perthshire, Scotland) represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale, with inter-media work commemorating the names of all those who died as a result of the Political Troubles in Northern Ireland, from 1969 to 1997. During the 1970s and 1980s he made long, non-stop performances in Britain, America and Canada, of up to 144 hours duration. Subject matter dealt with political, social and cultural malfunction. Since 1989 he’s been a member of the highly regarded performance art entity, Black Market International. He is presently an Emeritus Professor of Fine Art from the University of Ulster, Belfast, Northern Ireland.
This exhibition is supported by Bagri Foundation, British Council through the Connections Through Culture grants programme, Birmingham City University, University of Leeds, and the Melati Suryodarmo Exhibition Circle: A.I. Gallery; ShanghART, Tanya Michele Amador and Michiel Verhoeven; and Michelangelo and Lourdes Samson.
It is developed in collaboration with Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara (Museum MACAN), Jakarta, Indonesia.
