Ikon is an internationally acclaimed art gallery situated in central Birmingham.

Housed in a magnificent Grade II listed neo-gothic school building, the gallery features temporary exhibitions over two floors, alongside Ikon Shop and Café.

IKON GALLERY

Entry to Ikon is free. The gallery shows work by artists from around the world and a variety of media is represented, including sound, film, mixed media, photography, painting, sculpture and installation. Donations welcome.

IKON SHOP

Ikon Shop is Birmingham’s only specialist art bookshop, stocking a range of books, cards, artists’ limited editions and gifts. Ikon is a charity and all purchases support the gallery’s exhibition and education programme.

National Treasures: Artemisia in Birmingham
Jesse Jones: Mirror Martyr Mirror Moon
Ikon is a partner in National Treasures, a key strand of the programme celebrating the National Gallery’s Bicentenary, NG200. Ikon presents a masterpiece by Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1654 or later), Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria (about 1615-17). Wrapped around the Gentileschi work, and made as a direct response, is a solo exhibition by contemporary Irish artist Jesse Jones, whose artistic practice crosses film, sound, performance, sculpture and installation.

Silver Lining at JW Evans Silver Factory
Through Silver Lining, an off-site commission for English Heritage, Kitson honours a lost industrial past, utilising new technologies to create sculptural interventions in a former silver factory, celebrating the history and popular culture of Birmingham and the Black Country.

Feeding Chair
Sally Butcher: Visible Bodies
Ikon hosts Feeding Chair (2022), a collaborative artwork which invites parents and carers to feed their young children in galleries and other public venues. Featuring artwork by artist Jade de Montserrat, the chair integrates audio works and videos about infant feeding, gender and public space.
