Ikon hosts a free children’s workshop to celebrate the launch of Ruth Millington’s new children’s book This Book Will Make You An Artist.
In this workshop children can learn how to create a Cubist collage like Pablo Picasso or make an abstract mobile like Hilma af Klint, taking inspiration from Ruth Millington’s new book– an inspiring introduction to 25 artists from around the world. Combining fascinating art facts with the creativity and excitement of a craft session, this interactive and inspiring event will have children keen to pick up their pencils and get creative. This event also includes a book signing.

About the book
This Book Will Make You An Artist is a new art activity book for children by Birmingham writer Ruth Millington, and illustrated by Ellen Surrey. Using this book you can explore 25 different art techniques – from cave painting to contemporary performance – inspired by ground-breaking artists from around the world. Pick up your pencils, collect your collage materials and find out more about some of the world’s best-known creatives in this fact-filled book, full of step-by-step activities that are easy to try at home. Aimed at children aged 5-7.

About the writer
Ruth Millington is an art historian, critic and author, specialising in modern and contemporary art. Her specialist research interests include working class, outsider and women artists. She has written for publications including The i newspaper, The Sunday Times, The Telegraph, Daily Mail, Sorbet Magazine and BBC Online and is currently Writer in Residence at The Birmingham & Midland Institute. Millington has featured as an art expert on TV and radio, including BBC Breakfast, Sky Arts and ITV News.
