Conference – Encountering Carlo Crivelli: From the Workshop to the Museum
Organised in partnership with The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, this free event will be live streamed via YouTube. To watch online, please subscribe to Ikon Gallery’s YouTube channel.
This conference brings together international scholars, contemporary artists and museum professionals to present research on the work of Carlo Crivelli (c. 1430-94/5), and to exchange insights gained from Ikon’s exhibition Carlo Crivelli: Shadows on the Sky, (23 February – 29 May 2022).
With their witty effects of illusion, multimedia techniques and surprising juxtapositions, Crivelli’s complex paintings are undergoing a moment of reappraisal. No longer confined to the margins of art history, Carlo Crivelli is now recognised as an artist who pushed the aesthetic boundaries of his time, prompting us to reassess the ways in which we think of Italian Renaissance art. Taking stock of these developments, this conference will consider Crivelli’s work from a temporal viewpoint, from its origins in the workshop to its reception today. Encounters with Crivelli’s paintings will be explored in the form of short papers and roundtable debates.
