Inspired by Ikon’s exhibition by Birmingham-born fashion designer Osman Yousefzada, this retreat provides an alternative environment to develop your own artistic practice through practical handson activities while contextualising your learning background. Join our Learning team and Zoë Hillyard for a textile-based workshop exploring identity through material fragments and construction. Using Japanese boro fabrics as a reference, enjoy exploring distressing, layering, stitching and bonding, using textile approaches to collage in the creation of a personal ‘relic’ that expresses something about who you are and what you treasure.
Zoë is a textile designer and artist whose work explores material journeys and cultural experiences through construction processes – most recently combining silk and ceramics. She currently teaches Textile Design at Birmingham City University and has previously worked at the Textile Institute in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. www.zoehillyard.com
Organised in collaboration with regional teachers’ network 4MAT and Birmingham Educational Partnership.
