Autumn Almanac: The Voice and the Lens, 8-11 November is a
festival and exhibition exploring the treasures of the human voice,
conjured up for our eyes through film and performance. Curated by Sam
Belinfante and Third Ear.

First and Second Floor Galleries and Tower Room

Established and emerging artist film-makers are brought together with
leading vocal performers to wrestle over the relationship between the
voice and the camera. This exhibition features new work by artists Sam
Belinfante, Amy Cunningham, Bruce McLean, Jayne Parker and Imogen
Stidworthy, with vocalists Adam de la Cour, Loré Lixenberg and Elaine
Mitchener. Alongside these, artists from Birmingham Institute of Art
& Design (BIAD) and vocalists from Birmingham Conservatoire make
their own responses.

In the Second Floor Galleries we present a series of mute images of voices by Sam Belinfante, Kathryn Faulkner, Mikhail Karikis, Yiannis Katsaris, and Sam Taylor-Wood.

More information about The Voice and the Lens
The voice can be seen as the technology of the human, yet we can learn about it through other less organic technologies. We talk about the voice in terms of its ‘colour’ and ‘focus’; the techniques and language that apply to light are mimicked by the mouth’s own aperture. It seems increasingly important to look at the voice rather than just to hear it. The Voice and the Lens is a meditation on two facing technologies that are fundamental in
understanding ourselves and the world around us.
