FAMILY SATURDAY
Families are invited to experience Artemisia Gentileschi’s masterpiece Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria (about 1615-17), and create collaborative artworks in response.
Gentileschi’s painting is complimented by an immersive exhibition by contemporary artist Jesse Jones, which is rich with symbolism, referencing ancient Irish traditions of healing water rituals. Images on fabric are drawn around the space, obscuring and revealing the artworks. Artist Imogen Morris leads a session for families to create mixed media scenes, with layers of drawing, collage and fabric.
This event is organised to coincide with Ikon’s exhibition National Treasures: Artemisia in Birmingham (10 May – 8 September). It is presented as part of Ikon’s 60th anniversary year.
Jesse Jones’ exhibition is supported by The Ampersand Foundation, Culture Ireland, Arts Council of Ireland and The Finnis Scott Foundation.
