Film Screening: Dion & The Unicorn (2024)
Dion & The Unicorn (2024) is an observational documentary film that follows British artist Dion Kitson, as he embarks on his first major solo exhibition Rue Britannia at Ikon Gallery, and an ambitious off-site presentation Silver Lining for English Heritage.
This screening is introduced by the filmmaker Dan Watts and precedes a talk with artists Dion Kitson and Gavin Turk (6.45-8pm).
Filmmaker Dan Watts follows Kitson’s lively escapades; from his political satire in brushes with the tabloid press, to creating a life-size sculpture of Prince Harry and self-portrait as the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz.
About the filmmaker
Dan Watts is a Birmingham-based, documentary filmmaker, who makes films about unseen individuals, places and communities. Exploring traditions, subcultures, art, the weird and wonderful, and people on the fringes of society, mixing satire with serious subject matter, he endeavours to break preconceptions and stereotypes.
Watts is currently making a five-part docu-series on the history of the Midlands Arts Centre, digging into the archives and uncovering the moments and people that made the centre what it is today. Previous documentaries include Newcastle Brown Male: Inside The Fringe (2020, aired on STV), which follows presenter Jack Dargov and comedian Raul Kohli, as he takes on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Cabby (2015, premiered at Manchester International Film Festival), following the stories and characters of Manchester’s taxi driver community.
