He An
I talked to Ah Chang on the way to work. After work I ended the relationship. I stood in Paradise Circus and cried for hours…
Part of an internationally emerging generation of artists born after the Cultural Revolution, He An’s work reflects both the impact of mainstream western culture on China, and the situations of many young people, especially those migrating from the provinces to the major cities. For Birmingham he has produced a huge illuminated sign above Moat Lane Carpark, on the edge of Digbeth. The sign monumentalises the private experience of a young Chinese man known to the artist, whose relationship fell apart following his move to the city to find work. He An’s project is part of CHINA NOW, the UK’s largest ever festival of Chinese culture, www.chinanow.org.uk
He An’s off-site project is supported by CHINA NOW and Intelligent Alternative.
