Exhibition installation and shop refurbishment

During January, Ikon’s Gallery and Shop are closed while we refurbish the shop and install new exhibitions.

After successfully receiving funding from the Arts Council England Transform stage two programme, Ikon’s Ground Floor Shop area is having a much-needed update.

Architects firm Howells helped pull a brief together and Ikon appointed local designers Sculpt Design to reconfigure the Shop space, following our sustainable vision and working sympathetically with the building’s materials. As part of the renovation, the Shop will expand to create a flexible, open plan environment, improving visitor experience and accommodating more events.

Ikon reopens on Thursday 8 February: please join us from 5-7pm for the launch of our new exhibitions: Start the Press! and Exodus Crooks: Epiphany (Temporaire).

Ikon’s online shop remains open. Shop online here.

York Cafe at Ikon reopens on Saturday 13 January. (Open Wednesday-Sunday, 11am-5pm).

Start the Press!
The centrepiece of Start the Press! is a vintage, flatbed printing press from Wolverhampton School of Art, taking its position in the gallery as a form of protest or occupation in the tradition of the student art-school sit-ins of the 1960s, and in response to the current challenging economic landscape. A cohort of West Midlands printmakers will operate the press, producing original prints and filling the gallery walls as work is made in real time.
