Exhibition Talk: Dr. Siobhán Jolley
Join Dr. Siobhán Jolley, Howard and Roberta Ahmanson Research Fellow in Art and Religion at the National Gallery, for a deeper exploration of Artemisia Gentileschi’s painting, Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria, about 1615-17.
Gentileschi’s masterpiece is currently on display at Ikon Gallery as part of the National Gallery’s National Treasures programme, and central to Jesse Jones’ exhibition, Mirror Martyr Mirror Moon.
Discover how Gentileschi’s transformative years in Florence, a vibrant hub of artistic innovation, profoundly influenced her work and the significance of her decision to paint herself onto the canvas. Embodying Saint Catherine allowed Gentileschi to assert her identity, showcase her artistic prowess and take ownership of her personal story of strength and defiance. Don’t miss this opportunity to delve into the life and legacy of one of history’s most influential female artists.
This event is organised to coincide with Ikon’s exhibition National Treasures: Artemisia in Birmingham / Jesse Jones: Mirror Martyr Mirror Moon (10 May – 8 September 2024).
The exhibition is supported by The Ampersand Foundation, Culture Ireland, Arts Council of Ireland and The Finnis Scott Foundation. It is presented as part of Ikon’s 60th anniversary year.
