Ikon presents a free screening of Italian filmmaker Diego Marcon’s short film Monelle (2017) at Midlands Arts Centre. More information about Monelle available here.
The screening is followed by a Q&A with Marcon and author Christopher Beanland (Concrete Concept – Brutalist Buildings Around The World, 2016). Together they discuss Marcon’s artistic practice, his interest in Italian fascist architecture, cinema and the horror genre.

The afternoon includes a feature screening of Smooth Talk, a 1985 film selected by Marcon starring Laura Dern as a 15-year-old teen who is approached by a mysterious and dangerous stranger.

Biographies
Diego Marcon’s films, videos and installations consider the relationship between reality and representation. They make connections between theoretical discourse on the ontology of the moving image and popular forms of genre cinema and television, such as horror. His film Monelle (2017) has been screened in public galleries and film programmes, including Can a door be fascist? (Institute of Contemporary Art, London, 2021). His recent film, The Parents’ Room (2021) was screened during Directors’ Fortnight at the 74th Cannes Film Festival (2021) and presented in the 59th Venice Biennale, The Milk of Dreams (2022).
Christopher Beanland is the author of two novels The Wall in The Head (2019) and Spinning Out of Control (2014) and several non-fiction books including Concrete Concept – Brutalist Buildings Around the World (2016).
