About the artist
Ratu R. Saraswati (b. 1990, Jakarta, Indonesia) uses storytelling, performance, and photography to engage with people to nurture empathetic relationships. In her practice, she examines the nature of human aggression and reparation, attempting to find balance by actively anticipating and sensing real-life encounters. Saraswati’s works are the result of continuous reflections on her sense of selfhood and taking a position in diverse conditions.
Saraswati obtained her Bachelors degree from the Faculty of Art and Design’s Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia (2013). Her performances have been commissioned for the Jakarta Biennale (2017) and Biennale Jogja (2019). She was a resident artist at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam (2020-22), where she wrote and published the collection of parables, Route of Flowers.
This exhibition is supported by Bagri Foundation, British Council through the Connections Through Culture grants programme, Birmingham City University, University of Leeds, and the Melati Suryodarmo Exhibition Circle: A.I. Gallery; ShanghART, Tanya Michele Amador and Michiel Verhoeven; and Michelangelo and Lourdes Samson.
