School Radio Station
Local DJ Gauntie Carter worked with five Year 10 pupils at Handsworth Wood Girls School, Birmingham during the summer term 2003. The school was awarded £5,000 by Barclays New Futures in order to purchase equipment to set up a recording studio and radio station within a disused area of the school. Gauntie hosts a weekday breakfast programme for a community radio station New Style Radio in Handsworth, Birmingham.
Wallpaper from the Down on Paper project was installed in the specially chosen area of the school and acted as a tool for recording information, both text and images, in order to document the process of setting up the broadcast room. When the new technical equipment was installed, Gauntie trained the pupils with a variety of techniques, including interviewing and themed debates, which once the radio station is up and running will be transmitted live in the school dinner hall and library during lunchtimes.
