Spilling the Tea

with Roo Dhissou

Join artist/researcher Roo Dhissou for an intimate performance sharing tea, biscuits and conversation. Tea is a strategy for dialogue: an informal gossip circle, a ‘gendered’ approach to sharing intimate information, the kitty party. *sips tea*, *spills tea*

The conversation may include colonialism, class, prayer, war, ceremony, death, theft, queerness, sugary tea and gossip. Tea and cups are provided, though guests are encouraged to bring their own favourite drinking vessels from home.

This event is organised to coincide with the Art School Laboratory Showcase (23 – 26 May), with Osman Yousefzada and students from Birmingham School of Art.

About the artist

Artist/researcher Roo Dhissou works with communities, diasporas and her own histories. Using community engaged practice, craft, cooking, performance and installation she explores how communal and individual identities are formed.

Dhissou has worked with BMAG, New Art Gallery Walsall, Niru Ratnam, The Bluecoat, Tate Liverpool, Primary and internationally in Spain, Canada and Poland. Dhissou is currently working on a practice based PhD and has work in permanent collections including Arts Council Collection. She is interested in DIY culture, care and ethics both in and outside of institutions.
