Join one of Ikon’s Information Assistants for a 30-minute tour of Shelagh Wakely’s Rug for CBSO Centre. Commissioned by Birmingham’s Public Art Commissioning Agency in the 1990s, Wakely’s hand tufted rug measures over six-metres in length, and was originally the carpet for CBSO’s reception. Following renovations at the centre, the rug was restored and is now displayed on a wall.
Shelagh Wakely (1932 – 2011) was born in Madingley, Cambridgeshire. A pioneer of installation art in the UK, her practice was characterised by a delicate touch, tracing the shifting behaviour of light and observations of nature. Her exhibition Gold/dust was held at Ikon’s John Bright Street venue in 1992.
