In 1997 the transformation of Oozells Street School into Ikon Gallery’s new home was completed. Artist Tania Kovats was a member of Levitt Bernstein’s architectural team, influencing the redevelopment and ensuring the gallery spaces were suited to the needs of contemporary artists – most significantly she placed the building on a slate plinth, making the gallery itself a work of art. Kovats, in conversation with Thomas Ellmer, Ikon Assistant Curator, discusses her role as Artist Advisor, her 2000 Ikon exhibition Lost, and her sculptural works in A Very Special Place: Ikon in the 1990s.
