Drawing & painting with Rafal Zar
Join artist Rafal Zar for a drawing and painting workshop on Slow Boat, taking inspiration from Birmingham’s industrial and botanical landscape. Zar is Ikon’s artist in residence on Slow Boat during The Migrant Festival 2022, engaging with local youth groups and creating new works that fuse life, art and nature.

This event is part of The Migrant Festival 2022 and Ikon’s Arrivals programme for Summer 2022, concerned with the international movement of people and ideas and organised to coincide with the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
About the artist
Rafal Zar is a painter who moved to Birmingham from Poland in 2006. With a BA in Fine Art Easel Painting from University of Silesia and an MA in Fine Art from Birmingham City University (2012), his figurative paintings are highly imaginative, investigating themes of personal identity and existential crisis. Through solo exhibitions at Birmingham Midlands Institute and Eastside Projects, Zar has shared his story of self-discovery, conveying humour, sexuality, religious trauma and a fascination with nature. His work also featured in Ikon’s exhibitions Forward (2019) and Ikon For Artists (2021).
