Roger Hilton (1911-1975) played an important role in the re-emergence of abstract painting in post-war Britain. Starting with strict geometric abstraction, he gradually began to introduce figurative elements into his paintings, believing that painting has to be harnessed to some idea. However, he always strove to maintain a balance between these two aspects of his work. This major retrospective includes paintings and works on paper from various stages in his career, offering new insight into the development of Hilton’s distinctive style of painting.
