This exhibition is a survey of Basil Beattie’s recent paintings and drawings. Beattie’s large-scale canvases occupied the space with their strong shapes and subtle colours. Beattie’s paintings do not represent objects in a realistic manner, but they nevertheless contain powerful physical presences. Blocks, grids and wedges appeared in various forms and combinations, not only to create new pictorial spaces, but also to produce an atmosphere of tension or foreboding. Even the titles – Rivals, Squaring Up, Imagine If – suggested certain emotional relationships, either between the elements on the canvas or between the painting and the viewer. A number of smaller Chinese ink drawings, exhibit Beattie’s characteristic sense of line and space are also displayed.
