Ideas of Englishness – from Tommy Cooper to Charles Darwin, schools to stately homes – lie at the heart of Mark Wallinger’s work. From the mid-1980s to the time of this exhibition, Wallinger’s paintings, photographs, videos and sculptures have been exhibited throughout Europe and America. However, this was the first major survey of his wide-ranging work, including pieces never seen before in Britain, new paintings and video installations. Touching on subjects as diverse as school life, football, horse racing and the royal family, the exhibition offers a subversive and often humorous look at aspects of our national culture and obsessions.
