Ikon presents retrospective of Victor Grippo’s work in Europe – brought together pieces from the 1970s to the mid-1990s and included recreations of early installations produced during a succession of dictatorships. Grippo, who also trained as a chemist with a lifelong interest in the relationships between art, science and the everyday. From installations using potatoes to make energy visible as an analogy for human consciousness, to lead forms splitting apart under the pressure of sprouting beans, Grippo’s work often deals with hidden potential, instability, and the transformations that result. The materials he uses, and their associations with the daily lives of people in his homeland, also give Grippo’s art a powerful symbolic and political significance.
This exhibition is a collaboration with the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels.
