PAST EXHIBITION

Avis Newman

This major exhibition by Avis Newman brings together works form the late 1980s to the mis 1990s. Central to Newman’s work has been drawing as a process of representation and image-making and the importance of the body in relation to mark-making and language. Throughout the eighties, Newman produced intricate and engaging large unstretched canvases evoking partial outlines of animal and human forms. She also developed a series of hermetically sealed boxes containing materials and natural elements, such as wood graphite, snail shells and honeycomb which refer to essential form such as the spiral, or elemental matter. The series of beautifully crafted ‘composite’ work that often combine monotone canvases (which on closer inspection contain deeply embedded marks or images) with boxes, books, vitrines and tables, refer to both language and image-making, script painting.
