Ikon presents solo exhibition of the work of Callum Innes, who won the prestigious NatWest Art Prize this year. Callum Innes is the first British abstract painter to present a solo show in the new Ikon Gallery. Since graduating in 1985, Innes has developed a distinctive painting style which had led to acclaim in Britain and abroad. He was shortlisted for both the Turner Prize and the Jerwood Prize in 1995. Innes paintings are characterised by their use of pure blocks of colour, sometimes vibrant reds or greens, at other times subtle greys and whites. By applying turpentine to remove the painted surface, the pure colour is given texture and variation – a process which gives a natural, organic feel to the intensely controlled colours.
