About Town – Video art in Southside

Off-site Exhibition
Various locations around Southside, central Birmingham
4-10pm, free

Ikon, in partnership with Hippodrome Plus, presents an exhibition of international video art in the Southside district, showcasing a wide variety of free night-screenings by artists from the UK and abroad, in unusual urban spaces.

New commissions inspired by their location, alongside films from Ikon’s recent programme, explore everyday city life. Works include Beat Streuli’s New Street (2013), projected sequences of photographic stills across three large screens; Gillian Wearing’s Broad Street (2001) which focuses on Birmingham’s frenetic night-life and Oliver Beer’s Pay and Display (2011), an experimental music video made in collaboration with the city’s Ex Cathedra choir. Birmingham Hippodrome hosts Adel Abdessemed’s Happiness in Mitte (2003) and Kelly Mark’s Hiccup #2 (2006) whilst other venues show new commissions by Dean Kelland and Perry Roberts, plus Cornelia Parker’s Chomskian Abstract (2007); and Grace Ndiritu’s Nightingale (2003), amongst others.

About Town is supported by Arts Council England and Southside Business Improvement District.

Beat Streuli
New Street
Ikon, in collaboration with EACC Castellón, presents photography, video and digital projections by acclaimed Swiss artist Beat Streuli. A kind of portraiture of urban life, his work contains close-up images of people, often captured unawares as they negotiate city streets. In the midst of abstract city details, their faces, gestures and looks engage us in unremarkable, everyday drama.

Oliver Beer
The Resonance Project: Pay and Display
In June 2010 artist Oliver Beer worked with Ikon and singers from Ex Cathedra to create a sound piece at Pershore Street Car Park in Birmingham. Pay and Display continues his series of works entitled The Resonance Project (2007-2011) in which he uses the human voice to stimulate buildings to resound as giant architectural instruments.
