This survey exhibition presented together for the first time a significant body of Amikam Toren’s work from the past twelve years. In this exhibition a teapot was smashed and the fragments were ground to a powder which became a painting of the teapot. Chairs were filed down and images of chairs made from the shavings, newspapers were pulped to make ‘paint’, kitsch landscapes were violated by slogans cut into them. Amikam Toren destroys what may be regarded as a mundane object, only to resurrect it in such a way as to throw into question its relationship to reality and the very nature of artistic representation. Israeli-born Toren has lived in London since 1968 and is represented by the Anthony Reynolds Gallery.
This exhibition was produced in collaboration with Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol.
