On 8 May 2001, Tatsumi Orimoto made a performance as his famous alter ego ‘Bread Man’, his face obscured behind a tangle of twine and loaves of bread. The artist believes that what matters above all is the effect he has on the people he encounters. Deliberately, he was barely able to see through his self-imposed deformity as he walked around the open market shaking hands and announcing his presence by ringing a small bell. The overall mood engendered by the performance was one of strange camaraderie.
