Clean is an exhibition that, along with its counterpart Dirty, is contextualised by the AIDS crisis, public debates about the health of society, and an age obsessed with cleanliness. What was immediately evident about the works in Clean was their construction with pristine, synthetic materials. Stark, gleaming and clean they certainly were: but did these works result from an artistic study of form, a celebration of ‘purity’, or a criticism of what immaculate surfaces might disguise? Clean featured three artists who started by focusing on the appearance of objects, but who end up raising disturbing questions about the culture in which these items are produced.
Artists include: Eric Bainbridge, Una Rosie Smith and Craig Wood.
