Pierre Huyghe’s work Concrete Requiem was an orchestral composition, nine minutes long, that was performed for the first time by members of the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. It was synchronised with a video piece documenting the artist’s exploration of Birmingham city centre. The soundtrack of the video was transformed into a ten-part musical score through a combination of computer programmes and collaboration with the composer, James Bentley. The title of the work at refers to the imminent Birmingham and Modernist notions of a ‘concrete’ aesthetic.
