Students from Coventry University have made new work in response to Horror in the Modernist Block (25 November 2022 – 1 May 2023), considering themes of the horror genre (suspense, darkness and fear) and characteristics of modernist design.
With work produced by Fine Art, Photography and Illustration students, the exhibition demonstrates a commitment to medium and exploration of new materials and techniques.
Crucially, the works feature a Coventry perspective, a city renowned for its architectural diversity and its concrete post-war developments. The artists have explored how these skylines may be perceived by locals as well as those who have travelled internationally to study in the city.
This showcase touches on the relationship between spaces of brutalism and the identities of the communities who inhabit them, considering how individuals are affected by the deterioration and subsequent demolition of urban infrastructure.
Horror in the Modernist Block is supported by Fluxus Art Projects, Embassy of the Netherlands, Freelands Foundation, Italian Cultural Institute and The Modern Institute.
