Individuals and societies often try to ignore troublesome issues – to sweep them under the carpet. However, the artists in Dirty deliberately swept the ‘mess’ back into public view so it could be considered in a more thoughtful way. The artists in Dirty have drawn attention to dark and gritty issues including AIDS, the troubles in Northern Ireland and issues of discrimination and instability with regards to disability and gender.
