Colin Pearce’s Doppelganger involved a laser beam which was projected above the surface of the canal, slicing through Brindleyplace, central Birmingham, over two consecutive nights. Its straightness clearly corresponded to the man-made shape of the canal. The title refers to the reflection of the laser line in the waters surface, moving and irregular in the small ripples, as much a part of the work as the unnatural source of light.
