Tony Oursler

Dummies, Dolls, and Poison Candy, Cigarettes, Flowers and Videotape

In the 1990s, Tony Oursler was one of the most innovative American artists working in multi-media. Oursler’s imagery is drawn from a vast array of sources, including pop culture, television and folk art, to produce work rich in metaphor and allusion.

Yet the familiar is made strange as Oursler distorts main-stream imagery, giving it an ironic twist or exaggerating it beyond all expected proportions. In this way, Oursler challenges our commonplace assumptions about the family, individual identity and consumer culture. Like an unsettling dream, Oursler’s art exposes the disturbing underside of popular myths of contemporary life and so undermines our desire to live them out unquestioningly.
