Eveything is Interesting

Everything is Interesting was the first presentation of work by Canadian artist Kelly Mark in the UK. This consisted of several events, interventions and performances. With a conceptualism characterised by obsessive modes of collection and Sisyphean repetition, Mark responded to various aspects of the city over a number of weeks with the proposition that ‘Everything is Interesting’. This in fact was the slogan printed on thousands of badges, freely given away, and emblazoned on pages of the local broadsheet, The Birmingham Post. I really should, a litany of countless things for self-improvement – ‘I really should organise my day better’, ‘I really should learn French’ etc – likewise appeared in the Post, was printed on shopping bags and heard as a sound recording in Ikon’s stairwell. Glow House involved the artist flooding the interior of a suburban house with the light of fifty televisions turned to the same channel. Viewed from the street and only at night, a cool grey-blue pulsation seemed to dissolve the walls and floors of the building – taking it over like some alien force in a late-night TV horror film.
