Antony Gormley

Field for the British Isles

Winner of the 1994, Turner Prize and creator of Birmingham’s Iron Man, Antony Gormley is renowned for his distinctive representation of the human form. Field for the British Isles fills Ikon’s entire lower gallery with over 30,000 roughly modelled clay figures. Standing at the threshold looking over the sea of figures, the viewer is entranced by their collective gaze, uncertain whether they are the onlookers or the looked-upon. Whereas Field invades the gallery creating a landscape of small earthen figures, sculptures such as Passage and Sense presented life-sized impressions of the artist’s body within the confines of cast concrete blocks.
