Cinthia Marcelle uses video, performance and photography to test and record the effects of small reversals, adjustments or insertions into the usual order of things. Fonte 193 (Fountain, 2007) shows a fire engine chasing its tail, its tyres tracing a circle on the ground as day turns to night. The fire hose points inwards, shooting a jet of water into the centre of the circle and so creating an inverted fountain.
Circularity also features in Volta ao Mundo (Round the World, 2004), in which nine white Volkswagen vans are driven for ten minutes around a courtyard. Positioned an equal distance apart they frustrate the efforts of other vehicles to break into the circuit. Confronto (Confront, 2005) presents a similarly obstructive staged action at a crossroads in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Fire jugglers perform on the crossing while traffic lights are red, moving aside as they turn to green. Each time the lights change two more jugglers swell their ranks until a virtual wall of fire is formed. At this point the jugglers fail to stop or step aside despite a green signal, provoking a deafening soundtrack of car horns and revving engines from increasingly aggressive drivers.
