The Futureland photographs by John Kippin and Chris Wainwright raised issues relevant far beyond the North East of England. Industrial decline, unemployment, consumerism and the environment, heritage-tourism were then part of the fabric of much of Britain, including the West Midlands. Chris Wainwright’s pictures were blown up to a size reminiscent of the ubiquitous billboard, while their lines made them resemble a television image. Blown up to this size, the details began to break down into a kind of electric impression.
