Eve Arnold

In Retrospect

Eve Arnold was one of the world’s most influential photographers. For more than four decades her photographs captured the world’s leading figures and the unfolding of events in the latter half of the twentieth century. Entirely self-taught, her achievements were recognised when she became one of the first American women to be accepted by the prestigious international co-operative of photographers, Magnum Photos. As a star photographer for both Life Magazine and the Sunday Times Colour Magazine, she became a chronicler of the rich and famous as well as an ardent critic of McCarthyism and presented to a wider public the effects of apartheid and poverty. This retrospective of over 200 photographs encompassed a life-time’s work dedicated to the portrayal of the individual and their role in society.
