Ikon organised the first major UK exhibition by Swiss artist Jean Frederic Schnyder. He has received much international acclaim for his practice which includes painting, sculpture and embroidery. The exhibition consisted of over 100 paintings, surveying the artist’s eclectic style, derived from a holistic philosophy embracing naturalism, realism, kitsch, abstract, folk, popular and outsider art.

Schnyder’s work challenges the very essence of our understanding of art. As an artistic proposition, it is informed as much by the ‘anti-art’ thinking of Duchamp as by cultural influences closer to home, through the paintings of other Swiss artists such as Paul Klee and Ferdinand Hodler, a Calvinist upbringing and local wood carvings.
