Group exhibition selected by artist Terry Shave, whose paintings combine the material qualities of paint with the process of manufacture, creating synthetic surfaces through the use of flock, varnish and metal pigments. In the 1990s, Shave was incorporating photographic techniques to further explore the process of painting and the problems of picturing, as they endeavour to alter our readings and understanding of the traditions of painting itself. Shave has selected a number of artists whose work has emerged in the 1990s that share similar concerns within their work. Whether the work employes precise techniques, using readymade material or exists as a temporary intervention in the space, this exhibition probes the way these artists have been re-inventing painting as an expression of ideas and knowledge of the visible world.
Artists include: Mark Hammond, Alexis Harding, Louise Hopkins, David Martin, Victoria Morton, Cathy Wilkes, and Richard Wright.
