The first UK exhibition of work by Palestinian artist Ahlam Shibli. The exhibition included three series of photographs in various formats, depicting ordinary Palestinian lives in extraordinary circumstances under Israeli occupation. Shibli’s work aspires to a straightforward communication of daily life, paradoxically rarely seen.
Unrecognised focuses on ‘Arab al Na’im, a village in the Galilee region that does not exist on official maps. Photographs of the landscape, the villages, the villagers, their belongings’s and homes are remarkable for their spontaneity, openness and colour.
Self Portrait consists of eighteen colour photographs depicting various scenes around the village ‘Arab al Shibli, north of the West Bank, where the artist grew up. A small boy and girl loosely re-enact scenes from her childhood in a touching narrative of innocence and experience.
