Ikon presents Barbara Steinman’s first UK exhibition, Oracle. During the 1980s and early 1990s, Barbara Steinman created a number of installations which gave physical and poetic form to the way that cultural memory functions, revealing how remembering revises the past and reshapes it for consumption in the present. Oracle is a stunningly simple installation looking at our perceptions of time. Sand passed through an hourglass, recorded in real time, playing on six video monitors in a continuous cycle of filling and emptying. The hiss of sand against glass is made of a mix of different tracks of breathing and a voice told fortunes in random sequence, at random intervals.
