Martha Rosler

Positions in the Life World

Ikon presents the first retrospective of the work of Martha Rosler. Since the 1970s Rosler has produced a wealth of work that has inspired and intrigued in equal measure. Her work in a wide variety of media is humorous, serious, beautiful, ugly, vexing, political. Challenging the conventions of the art world, Martha Rosler also confronts the social myths that frequently masquerade as common sense. Whether through the photomontages of the late 60s and early 70s, when she peoples the perfect interiors of suburbia with images from the Vietnam War and mischievously adjusted images of women, or through projects of the late 80s that consider urban space and the class and race politics of housing and the wider world, Martha Rosler has opened debate through her art. This exhibition brings together the full range of her work for the first time to present an exciting overview of this highly influential artist’s work.

Following its premiere in Birmingham, this retrospective will tour to Lyons, Vienne, Barcelona and New York.
