Ikon presents solo exhibition by Birmingham-born artist, Keith Piper. This show re-presents Piper’s work from 1982 to 1997 in four installations, UnRecorded Histories, UnClassified, Another Arena and Cargo Cultures. More than a retrospective – Relocating the Remains propels past work and ideas forward – transforming them with new media and technology. The themes of earlier work remained – the urge to find a powerful Black voice and the exploration of stereotypes – but the means by which they were revisited in 1998, made for an urgent and vocal reappraisal of his career up to this point. Video, projections and computers combine light and sound to create an audio-visual explosion of experiences and ideas – sixteen years of work concentrated in just four installations – asking questions, demanding answers. An exhibition that, like the boxing subjects of Another Arena, packs a punch.
