Joan Miró

Sculpture

Miró: Sculpture was a South Bank touring exhibition of 37 Bronze sculptures. Joan Miró (1893 – 1983) was better known as a painter. Like his fellow Catalan, Salvador Dali, Miró was at the heart of the Surrealist movement in the 1920s and 30s. His preoccupation with sculpture came later, encouraged by the Spanish potter Artigas in the 1940s, and it continued into the 1980s.  In their combination of images, Miró’s sculptures have their roots in Surrealism and also in the rich natural landscape of his native Catalonia and Majorca. Rocks, bottles, cans, toys and farm implements were transformed into dreamlike assemblages.
