The legacy of the Victorian age is everywhere: in the architecture of our buildings, our furniture, our parks, and indeed, many of our underlying attitudes – from travel and horticulture to pastimes and sexuality. It was an era that threw up towering figures of art, literature and science. The legacy of this age and its people inspired a National Touring Exhibition from the Hayward Gallery, in which 20 artists from Britain and America dove into the obsessions of the age producing a distinctive 20th Century twist. The range of artists have produced an eclectic and diverse show, one that is beautiful, funny and occasionally disturbing. Secret Victorians is an exhibition of extraordinary work – an opportunity to be immersed in the lasting influences of a remarkable age.
Artists include: Suzanne Bocanegra, Glenn Brown, Saint Clair Cemin, Helen Chadwick, Mat Collishaw, Jeffrey Dennis, Douglas Gorgon, Jane Hammond, Louise Hopkins, Bill Jacobson, Sally Mann, Joan Nelson, Simon Periton, Steven Pippin, Lari Pittman, Elliot Puckette, Yinka Shonibore, Laura Stein, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Kara Walker.
