Photographer Mahtab Hussain presents portraits from his Slow Boat residency. These portraits were made between October-November 2017 in Ladywood Community Centre using the tintype photographic process – a Victorian technique using a chemical method that creates a ghostly image. Local communities are central to Hussain’s practice which addresses identity, heritage and displacement. As he states,
“I wanted to meet the residents of Ladywood to help build, through this residency, a strong working relationship between the community and Ikon for years to come.”
Ikon’s Slow Boat project, Looping the Loop, is supported by Arts Council England Strategic Touring, Michael Marsh Charitable Trust, W.A. Cadbury Trust, Grantham Yorke Trust, Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council and the Canal and River Trust.
Please note that this exhibition will be closed 11am–3pm on Thursday 1 March.
