Great monuments have represented the achievements and hopes of civilisations ever since the dawn of culture. Based on the symbolic marriage of the Statue of Liberty and the Column of Christopher Columbus, The Honeymoon Project, by Spanish artist Antoni Miralda, captured the public imagination worldwide. In a series of ceremonies, exhibitions and events, The Honeymoon Project explored the symbolism of monuments and wedding rituals in different cultures. Ikon commissioned a giant Eternity Ring inspired by Birmingham’s historic jewellery quarter. On Sunday 19 May 1991, as part of the festivities leading up to the opening of Birmingham’s International Convention Centre by HM Queen the following June, the Eternity Ring moved down the canals on a specially decorated barge. The wedding procession carried the ring through the city ending at Ikon where other gifts and documentations of the project, from around the world were exhibited. The exhibition at Ikon and accompanying public ceremony was the UK’s contribution to this international project. Other contributions were made by participants in New York, Tokyo, Barcelona, Philadelphia, New Orleans and Venice.
