The Travails of Blind Bifford Jelly

This exhibition presents artist John Yeadon’s project, The Travails of Blind Bifford Jelly consisted of several etchings and drawings that document the encounters of the mythical character, Blind Bifford Jelly, as he travels around the British Isles. Yeadon’s character is a Blemmayae, a foreigner who belongs to a long tradition of fabulous fantasy creatures associated since Greco-Roman times with far-off countries. Through Blind Biff Jelly, Yeadon explored the ambivalence of seriousness and laughter, conventions of storytelling and traditions of popular entertainment. His absurd adventures recall the heroic journeyings of literary figures such as Gulliver and Don Quixote. Yeadon also refers to the traditions of Punch and Judy and Aesop’s Fables.
